North Carolina Schools

EMC’s Apex, North Carolina manufacturing facility has cultivated a strong relationship with the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS), providing a variety of learning opportunities for students through program sponsorships, job shadowing, mentoring, and career fair participation. EMC’s investment in North Carolina schools has included the following:

Academy of Information Technology

EMC is the corporate partner of the Academy of Information Technology (AOIT) program at Wake County’s Apex High School.

The AOIT program equips students with the personal, analytical, technical, and communication skills they need to thrive in a global economy—and in the process introduces them to career opportunities in today’s digital workforce. In 2005, EMC’s Stephen Worth, director of Software Engineering, spoke at the first graduation ceremony for AOIT, and EMC funded college scholarships for outstanding graduates. In the 2006-7 school year, EMC engineers developed and delivered a seminar on computer hardware to the high school technology students.

• North Carolina mathematics competition
  In 2007, EMC sponsored the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics in their regional mathematics competitions. EMC funds supported scholarships for students who could not afford the entry fee, prizes for competition winners, and grants to teachers to start new teams in schools with high percentages of African-Americans and Latinos.
• North Carolina Technology Association
  EMC Vice President of North Carolina Operations, Robert Hawkins, is the chairman of the North Carolina Technology Association (NCTA). In this role he has led NCTA to endorse the ”NCTA Declaration of the 21 st Century Student,” a set of recommendations on preparing North Carolina's students for success in school, higher education, and the workforce.

Lufkin Lufkin Road Middle School Quality Keys Program

In 2003, EMC underwrote the cost of the Lufkin Road Middle School Quality Keys program and provided coaches and mentors to help the school become a certified Quality Keys School. Sponsored by the American Society for Quality (ASQ), Quality Keys is an initiative to develop quality and continuous improvement tools for schools assessing their curricular needs.

Business Alliance program

The WCPSS’s Business Alliance is a collaboration of business, community, and school leaders, committed to a public-private partnership for education. The goal is to teach students to be responsible, productive citizens who can effectively manage future challenges and are fully prepared for the workforce. EMC chairs the Business Alliances for Apex High School and Lufkin Road Middle School, and participates in the Alliance for Apex Middle School. EMC also chairs the regional Business Education Leadership Council for South Central Wake County, the umbrella organization of Business Alliances in that area.
